Interested in improving your writing skills and pitching your work to journals in Asian Studies? In partnership with the Association for Asian Studies and Social Science Baha, Routledge is pleased to announce a workshop specifically created for early career Asian Studies scholars, to be held Saturday 31st May from 8.30am to 12.30pm.

“Preparing your Research Article for Journal Publication” represents a unique training and networking opportunity during the AAS-in-Asia conference, designed to help early career scholars develop their ideas and working papers, ‘demystify’ the process of achieving publication in academic journals, and promote uptake of their research in these journals.

All conference attendees are invited to apply: the workshop is free of charge (including refreshments and lunch), but advance registration is required. Registration is limited to twenty (20) participants.

The workshop is designed to equip early career researchers with the skills and guidance necessary to conduct sound research and publish in top tier journals, while offering a forum for collaboration. Academic journal Editors will lead the workshop as mentors, providing research writing support including, but not limited to, conducting a literature review, encountering ethical questions, working with human participants, developing a research design and methodology, presenting one’s research project, etc.  We will match the research areas of successful applicants with the ‘aims and scope’ of the journals participating, as well as Editors’ areas of expertise.

Participants will not only receive feedback on writing, and develop a clear understanding of the academic publishing process, but also advice from the Publisher on journal selection and submission requirements, as well as the peer review process and tips on how to respond to reviewer feedback. The workshop will create a supportive environment for overcoming some hurdles that early career researchers face and double as an opportunity to help publish research.

We welcome scholars from any discipline, including those with interdisciplinary backgrounds, and from any ‘area’ of focus across Asia. We particularly encourage applications from individuals at resource-constrained institutions.

To apply, please register and submit the following via email to [email protected]:

  • A letter of interest, which must mention (1) an abstract and detailed plan of a proposed article focusing on issues in your field of interest; (2) a sample of previous writing which may be a draft of work you wish to develop through the workshop training.
  • A current curriculum vitae (CV).

All application materials must be submitted via email by April 21st, 2025.  Applicants will be notified that they will be able to attend by 1st May 2025.
